Title: Underground Railroad
Post by: ShadedDusk on April 11, 2015, 02:11:47 am
So a few days ago, I bought two bunnies from swim. She lived really far away from me though. So before I even got halfway home, both bunnies died.  :-\

So I decided the build an Underground Railroad. It'll be at around diamond level, so it won't interfere with many surface builds, but it'll be a 3x3 railroad system connecting around the whole map, making it easier to transport items. It will either go around spawn, or maybe it'll lead up and you'll have to walk through spawn. I haven't decided yet. It will be open to everyone who needs it.

But my concern is griefing. It will expand under the whole map, so it might be difficult to detect grief for a while. And also as I will be laying rails, minecarts, and torches for the expansion of the railroad, griefing will be an inconvenience to many people.

Any volunteers to help/critiques/advice/critism/comments?

It bugs me that I used the word 'so' to start off two paragraphs. Oops. Sorry to others who cringed while reading that as well.

I'm already doing that above ground though

I'll help some, i think  you should make it around the Boarder and conecting to spawn like this

then if anyone wants to(for shops and stuff), they can connect to the railroad

like a silk road/underground rr combo?

I can easily see how an above ground railroad would annoy a lot of people since it would cover a lot of land and may not look as nice, but underground sounds really neat. Something similar was built on the old map, and it looked pretty awesome. good luck! I may help from time to time :)

Sounds like a plan then. We could do this together :) Build above ground but if people don't want that then we'll build underground.

should we build paths like the spawn does? like stone bricks and stuff?

I like it. I didn't even realize there was an aboveground railroad. I'm starting up in the snowy region right now, halfway between the NotaRex and Shade castles. I'll try to get a branch or two connected up to the surface onto one of your rails. Only I don't know where your railroad starts/ends.

Do we have a solution to the grief question I proposed? (Blood, I believe parts of your railroad have already been griefed. :/)

Yea a couple of things but if people use the railroad and run into a grief, then they should report it so others don't have to run into it as well.

should we make a certain size all the way through? like is 3 blocks wide enough?

Well mine is just one block of rail so...
Title: Re: Underground Railroad

a path would be nice for people to bring stuff on, like a level walking road for animals on leads

I'm doing two railroads, so you can ride alongside your animals.

I'm keeping a path in the middle for if you feel like walking across the map. Or if you needed to get off somewhere. Although I can't imagine why you would need to get off at 50 blocks underground...

There should probably be designated directional tracks to avoid collisions. Like, you should only be going forward on the right one. Just like real life roads (except for the United Kingdom).

I'll play around with some redstone and see what i can come up with

EDIT:I made a device where you can choose to go straight or turn, its not a 4 way, but it'l have too do, the redstone is pretty compact and not too expensive, i mailed Shaded the location

If I recall correctly, a Redstone signal may be able to switch tracks, but at the speeds that carts go and the general 100 millisecond lag or so it may not be possible.

I think it's really neat. I went back and forth on it for a little while out of boredom.  :D
Sam (TattierAxis84) also offered to make a train station. Maybe this idea is one we can insinuate at the stations?

Oh, Alt, I noticed 1 thing, though. The button is located a little too far from the rail switch. I don't always make it there on time before the rail switches back. :/

I expand the redstone a bit and increased the time the rail was switched

Tatt and I will probably be working on the mining part, still. We're gonna make the first connection under the desert. It'll probably connect close to his home.

I'll work on another connection running towards spawn, possibly in a diagonal path. Still not sure how well that'll work out. I may just end up doing what Doom originally suggested, the columns leading from the border to spawn.

i have already started a similar project, have completed a path at bedrock over 1/8th of the map as of now.

There's me, you, Blood. Anyone else who wishes to speak up?

Do you want to work with us as well, solo? This'll get done a lot quicker with everyone pitching in.

isnt bedrock a bit low to be very easy to get to?

Building at bedrock is a death sentence you can run into lava very easily.

I think the biggest issue building at bedrock level is having limited room for potential redstone devices.

well i don't really plan on using redstone devices, i just work straight through the lava, lissy you've already seen the tunnel,i don't know if you would qualify it as fancy enough, and sure i will work with you tentatively for now.

there should be a coupple main Highways, and anyone can link up to these roads with their own tunnels and railways.

Redstone devices are essential for things like this, how are you going to 'turn' off the main railway?

what if exit roads had activator rails by them? just eject yourself at the exit

Of course, madmoiselle. But stone looks quite fancy.
And I find laziness to be a really pretty look sometimes.

I'd prefer Redstone lamps, they allow better control and IMO look better than sea lanterns

You only want redstone lamps so you can put redstone everywhere. but in terms of train tunnels, sea lanterns match better. and tunnel lights aren't meant to be turned off.

I'd have to go with sea laterns. I can get those a lot easier than I can get redstone lamps. They both have the same lighting level, so I feel sea lanterns might be the better choice. How many blocks does a sea lantern light up? I know for torches it's 7, but I don't know what it is for sea lanterns.

Lets make this very simple, what if we ALL connected all of our railroads TOGETHER, I am currently making one an Y=20 so if everyone doesn't mind can I build on to theirs, and they can build theirs onto mine (if mine, just ask and I probably say yes and offer to help).

Its a very simplistic solution
;)

20 too low, it makes it hard to get in and out

Y:40 makes oceans an issue, y:25 - 30 are a safer bet

Even though it may be an inconvenience for players using the railway what difference will 15 blocks make,  make it at diamond level

depending on how we plan on entering and exiting the railroad, it might make a big difference. a spiral staircase is much harder to move stuff in, but takes less space, a normal staircase is bigger but easier, stuff like that

well if we do eventually complete this I definitely need a railroad near my house.. I sell animals a lot and its a struggle trying to get the animals everywhere. My house is under ground so the railroad wont be much of an issue on any level. I am willing to help anywhere needed so just let me know when and where and im there! Also, we now have protection stones so grief wont be as much of a problem.
